Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Five years of academic and/or career advising experience, preferably at the lower division levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with campus partners in the design and implementation of new initiatives that enhance student engagement and retention in the first year.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career counseling theories and techniques.
  • Experience with integrated information systems and data analysis.
  • Experience in budget management and supervision of personnel.
  • Excellent organization, leadership and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills.

Unless otherwise required by an applicable collective bargaining agreement, all minimum, additional and desired qualifications are preferred, but qualifications, degrees, and/or experience deemed comparable and/or equivalent by Oakland University in its sole and exclusive discretion may be considered.

The mission of the First Year Center is to work in collaboration with Academic partners with all incoming students to develop a best fit choice of major, create a graduation plan, and identify and assist students facing challenges along the way. The Assistant Director of Advising is responsible for the design and implementation of services designed to improve student success, retention and graduation rates. The Assistant Director of Advising will direct innovative advising strategies based on theory and best practices. The Assistant Director will lead policy regarding advising protocol for first year and undecided students and career exploration and will also carry a caseload of students. The Assistant Director will be responsible for supervision of all personnel in the Advising area of the First Year Center.
