Job Description



This position serves as the department’s primary liaison for Tribal Affairs and intergovernmental coordination, supporting the government-to-government relationship between the state of Michigan and federally recognized Tribal Nations, as well as fostering collaboration with other governmental entities. The position provides statewide leadership and coordination on Tribal transportation issues, intergovernmental policy matters, and strategic initiatives that have a substantial impact on the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT’s) mission and policies.

The role requires advanced knowledge of transportation policy, Tribal sovereignty, and intergovernmental relations, and involves highly complex assignments with significant scope and impact across the department.


The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Departmental Specialist 13 position.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Experience
Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.

To be considered for this position you must:

  • Tribal sovereignty is a foundational principle in the relationship between Tribal Nations and state governments. As MDOT’s Intergovernmental & Tribal Affairs Specialist, you will often navigate complex issues where sovereignty and transportation policy intersect. In one page or less attach a written response, explaining what Tribal sovereignty means in practice and why it is essential to respect this principle in transportation planning and project delivery. Then, describe how you would foster collaborative governance between MDOT and Tribal governments while honoring sovereignty. Include specific strategies or examples of engagement that build trust and achieve shared transportation goals. Failure to do so may result in being screened out of the process.
